Actresses without Oscar
Actresses without Oscar
Traditionally, every March, hundreds of millions of viewers tune in from around the world to watch the Academy Awards. The tradition of having a comedic Master of Ceremonies has continued with Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Whoopi Goldberg, and Billy Crystal. Meanwhile, each year the ceremony seems more extravagant, as Hollywood televises its image around the globe. However, many worthy actresses still have not received an Academy Award. In fact, among actresses without Oscar are such names as Marilyn Monroe, Sharon Stone, Monica Bellucci, Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, and many more. And it is possible to doubt the ability of the members of the jury. Anyway, this year, academics have one more chance to show the world their independence from public opinion. So, January 15 will be announced the nominees, and 22 February will be the 87th award ceremony “Oscar”.
Noteworthy, the first Academy Awards ceremony was at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on May 16, 1929. By the way, it took Academy president Douglas Fairbanks five minutes to hand out all the awards. Best Actress and Best Actor were Janet Gaynor and Emil Jannings, while Wings won Best Picture. The ceremony was brief and unspectacular. Janet Gaynor professed to have been equally thrilled to receive the award as to have met Douglas Fairbanks. Meanwhile, the local and national media ignored the event completely.
Julianne Moore – four-time nominee for “Oscar”: in 1998 for “Boogie Nights,” in 2000 for “End of the Affair” in 2003 for “The Hours” and “Far From Heaven”. January 11, she was awarded a harbinger of the “Oscar” – “Golden Globe” – for the film “Still Alice”, in the plot of which the heroine of Moore suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Rave reviews from critics, as well as ten other awards for this role as if give a hint to academics.
Sigourney Weaver, tallest Hollywood actress (182 cm), the star of “Alien” and “Ghostbusters”. Interestingly, nominated three times, Sigourney did not get the “Oscar”. But she will come back to American academics around 2017, when there will be a sequel to “Avatar.” So, they have time to decide.
Helena Bonham Carter, the Muse of Tim Burton, nominated for “Oscar” twice. In particular, in 1998 for “Wings of the Dove” and in 2011 for “The King’s Speech”, but not for the role of psycho Marla Singer in “Fight Club”, for which the majority know her. However, in the “Golden Globe” she was nominated seven times in general. And Helena was awarded only at home in the UK.
Academics noticed great French actress only once: in 1992, when she presented the movie “Indochine”, and gave no statue to her, but to Emma Thompson for her role in “Howards End”. Incidentally, in the film also played Helena Bonham Carter, and also, not even nominated.
If it were not for Martin Scorsese with his gangster “Casino” for which Stone received the “Golden Globes”, she would forever remain an actress of one role. It is interesting that in addition to Stone the role of Katherine Tremell in “Basic Instinct” was offered to half of Hollywood: Kim Basinger, Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, and Michelle Pfeiffer. In any case, the film did not get anything except award of MTV. Sharon Stone has acquired worldwide fame, though so far it has not brought a single “Oscar” to her.
Kristin Scott Thomas – British actress, star of the film “The English Patient,” for which she was nominated for “Oscar” in 1997, “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Bitter Moon” and dozens of other films. A 54-year-old Christine has two orders: the Legion of Honor and the British Empire. And not a single Academy Award.
Monica Bellucci. Her beauty and sexuality have turned into a stamp. Little Monique, as she is affectionately called by colleagues, always carefully chooses the role, does not agree on everything. However, modeling career, with which it all began, has left an imprint in the minds of the audience, and whatever dramatic and intellectual roles Bellucci did not play, the audience, looking at her, do not think about her acting. This is probably why Monica is still without “Oscar”. But she has numerous European awards for “Apartment”, “Malena”, “The Matrix” and “The Passion of the Christ”.
Cameron Diaz – champion of awards and nominations from channel MTV: for the best dance, best kiss, best replica and so on. In her 42 she can not boast of decent prizes, even for the most worthy films.
Winona Ryder. It is not surprising that Winona Ryder has still had no “Oscar”. Luck periodically turns its back on her when Francis Ford Coppola offered 19-year-old Winona the role of daughter of Don Corleone in the third “Godfather”, she had to decline the offer because of illness. In 1999, she starred in the film “Girl, Interrupted”, but “Oscar” was given to Angelina Jolie, who played a brilliant role.
King Kong girl Naomi Watts was twice nominated for “Oscar”: for “21 Grams” and “impossible.” Her career is full of stellar movies: “Kill the President” with Sean Penn, “Divorce” with Kate Hudson and Glenn Close, “I Heart Huckabees” with Dustin Hoffman and Jude Law, “Stay” with Ewan McGregor. And that’s not to mention the “Mulholland Drive” by David Lynch, with whom she started her off. In 2014, Watts starred in “Berdmen” by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who certainly will qualify for the “Oscar” this year.
Spoiled by 35 prizes Claire Danes still has not got neither the “Oscar”, nor even a nomination for it. Other awards she has received mostly for her role in the TV series “Homeland» (Homeland) and for the TV movie “Temple Grandin.”
Marilyn Monroe. It is not known how it was that the symbol of world of cinema, sex, femininity, love and anything never received the “Oscar”, while being in the heart of Hollywood, and virtually having no competitors.
Michelle Pfeiffer was thrice nominated for Academy Award: for “Dangerous Liaisons,” “The Fabulous Baker Boys” and “Field of Love”.
