Today is David Lynch’s birthday. Director, screenwriter, producer, actor, film editor, cinematographer, composer, artist David Keith Lynch was born on January 20, 1946 in Missoula, Montana. His grandfather was a Finn, grandmother – German. He graduated from the Pennsylvanian Academy of fine arts. Lynch says that his work is more similar to European film makers rather than American ones, as most films by European directors “get down and thrill your soul”. Lynch admired such film makers as Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini, Werner Herzog and Jacques Tati. He has also stated that Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard (1950) is one of his favorite films, as is Kubrick’s Lolita.

In his personal life there are several long-term relationships. From 1967 to 1974 he was married to Peggy Lentz in Chicago, Illinois. They have one child, Jennifer Chambers Lynch, born in 1968, who is a film director.

In the film, directed by David Lynch, starred John Hurt, Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud, Wendy Hiller, Michael Elphick, Hannah Gordon, and Freddie Jones. The screenplay was adapted from the books The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences (1923) by Sir Frederick Treves and The Elephant Man: A Study in Human Dignity by Ashley Montagu.
