Miracle Island Chindo …walking on water is possible
Miracle Island Chindo. Near the island of Chindo (the third largest in the archipelago of the same name) in February and June a grand tide happens – a natural bridge under water, which connects the two islands (3 kilometers distance) opens. Twice a year, close to the blossoming islands literally the sea opens up – that’s when huge crowds of Koreans enjoy a good opportunity to take a walk. Miracles, and more!
Koreans gladly grab the opportunity given by nature. Little over an hour, during which paved the way for water, tens of thousands people manage to make a little pilgrimage, as if under the leadership of Moses.
Koreans have a legend about it. In ancient times the island of Chindo was terrorized by the Tigers. All the inhabitants fled to the neighboring island, but forgot the old woman Ppong. God felt pity for the old lady. and gave her good advice to go over the rainbow. Old Ppong obeyed, and she was reunited with her family.
All this history and the phenomenon of island Chindo became public, when in 1975 the French Ambassador to Korea Pierre Randi talked about this for the newspaper. Currently, nearly half a million local and foreign tourists annually visit the “make way for holiday water” on the island of Chindo.
