In 1971, near the village Darwaza in Turkmenistan Soviet geologists discovered a cluster of underground gas. Excavating and drilling, geologists had stumbled into an underground cavern (empty) causing the failed land and formed a large hole filled with gas. Drilling rig with all the equipment, vehicles fell into the resulting hole. Fortunately, the people in this incident were not injured. The livestock of gases did not go outside, and they decided to set it on fire. Geologists thought that the fire would go out after a few days, but made a mistake. Since 1971, the natural gas coming from the crater, continuously burns day and night. At that time, expectations were that the gas would burn out within days. However, set on fire in 1971, it is still burning! Four decades after the event. As of 2013, the hole is still burning.

Located on the border between two states – Texas and Louisiana, the USA, the Caddo is a unique lake. Named after the Southeastern culture of Native Americans Caddoans or Caddo, who lived in the area until their expulsion in the 19th century. Interestingly, since 1965, the Caddo has had hundreds of alleged Bigfoot sightings, according to the Texas Bigfoot Research Center. Noteworthy, the state protects the area of the lake as the place where grow the largest Cypress forest on the planet. According to Caddo legend, which is more truth than legend, the lake appeared due to the 1812 New Madrid Earthquake. Also, most geologists think that Caddo Lake was formed gradually rather than catastrophically. Impressive Cypress trees, especially those that are growing in swamps, often have special formations, called “cypress knees”. They are appendages resembling hemp, but growing directly from the roots of a tree. Buttressed bases and a strong, intertwined root system allow them to resist very strong winds. Even hurricanes rarely overturn them.

American photographer from New Jersey Robin Schwartz has been photographing her adorable daughter for more than 10 years. Amelia here is in a company of a variety of animals. The result has become impressive – two albums of beautiful and inspiring photographs – “The World of Amelia” and “kinship with animals.” Each album shows a girl next to wild animals to whom, at least as her mother sees it, they are like her brothers and sisters. Schwartz earned a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Pratt Institute. Her photographs are in the collections of private people and museums. Psychotria is a genus containing 1900 species within the plant family Rubiaceae. A small understory tree in tropical forests Psychotria Elata flowers became affectionately known as hooker’s lips. Unfortunately, some Psychotria species – endangered or facing extinction due to deforestation, especially species of central Africa and the Pacific. Many species, including Psychotria viridis, produce the psychedelic chemical, dimethyltryptamine (DMT). The name Cephaelis is considered a synonym of Psychotria. Psychotria grow in the tropical rain forests of Central and South America. In particular, in such countries as Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama and Ecuador. The plant attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, as well as photographers and tourists from all over the world.

Tolbachik volcano is located in the Far East of Russia, in Kamchatka. ‘A little adventure during the very first night at Tolbachik’, Andrey writes. “For us who were at the volcano explosion site for the first time it was quite unnerving. We had been waiting for the dark to come at the site where a lava tube was coming out of the surface. It was a full moon and perhaps it does make a difference on how active the explosion was. Perhaps it was the same principle that works with the tide in the ocean”.

In the city of Kamina, on the north of Chile, 147 km from the city of Iquique and approximately 3,700 m above sea level, there is the Red Laguna. Its waters have so bright red hue, that it seems that red ink or blood fills this lagoon. Noteworthy, the local people knew about this place, but the National Service of Tourism didn’t, until 2009. This region has long been inhabited by Aymara Indian people, who managed to preserve the ancient secrets and legends of this land. The same as Egyptian tombs have mysterious curse, this red pond also is rumored to be damned, and a curse imposed on anyone who approaches the red waters. That’s why no one knows where exactly the lagoon is, and just for this reason it is not on the map.
