Turkmenistan Gates of Hell
Turkmenistan Gates of Hell
In 1971, near the village Darwaza in Turkmenistan Soviet geologists discovered a cluster of underground gas. Excavating and drilling, geologists had stumbled into an underground cavern (empty) causing the failed land and formed a large hole filled with gas. Drilling rig with all the equipment, vehicles fell into the resulting hole. Fortunately, the people in this incident were not injured. The livestock of gases did not go outside, and they decided to set it on fire. Geologists thought that the fire would go out after a few days, but made a mistake. Since 1971, the natural gas coming from the crater, continuously burns day and night. At that time, expectations were that the gas would burn out within days. However, set on fire in 1971, it is still burning! Four decades after the event. As of 2013, the hole is still burning.
