Perhaps this is the real art, when a person with ordinary pencils and paper that can be bought in any store creates something very special and beautiful. The artist Maria Zeldis was born and raised in the Ukraine, trained as a professional pianist, and shared the love for the plastic arts with her twin sister. In the early 90s Maria moved to Mexico, where she currently lives and works. For the last 15 years Maria has dedicated her creativity to painting, drawing and design. Maria Zeldis’ works have our mentality and taste. The pretty orthodox girl that places a candle in the temple, and the girl in the window has so familiar Slavic features… The titles of her paintings depicting beautiful golden domes of orthodox churches – “Nostalgia”. Maria Zeldis’ favorite writer is Fyodor Dostoevsky. The artist creates nothing shocking, her work is not intended to arouse public opinion, it rather makes you forget about everyday problems and just enjoy the beauty of the surrounding world.

Contemporary artist Marina Rusanova is the author of lubok series illustrating Russian proverbs and sayings. Her beautiful drawings are derived from popular folk proverbs. Lubki (plural form of the word “lubok”) prints were previously used as decoration in houses and inns, then they were used in book printing. Such simple books mostly consisted of pictures, and were called lubok literature. Early examples of Lubok were dated back late 17th and early 18th centuries, originally they were painted woodcuts, from the mid-19th century they appeared in lithography. Lubki often appear in series, like this one, illustrated by Marina Rusanova Russian proverbs. Marina Rusanova was born in Moscow. She studied at the art school and worked as a graphic designer and an illustrator in different Moscow organizations. In 1981 she graduated from Moscow School of Textiles specializing in hand weaving and tapestry. Since 1982 Marina Rusanova has been participating in art exhibitions of the Moscow Union of Artists.

“Nederlandse Spreekwoorden” or Netherlandish Proverbs, also known as The Topsy-Turvy World was painted in 1559, by Pieter Brueghel the Elder. The large scale painting depicts the literal meanings of Dutch proverbs. Displayed in the Berlin art gallery “Nederlandse Spreekwoorden” is filled with symbols related to more than a hundred well-known Dutch proverbs and sayings. Not all of them have been deciphered by modern scholars, as some expressions have been forgotten. Five years later, in 1564, the country was described proverbially by French writer Rabelais in his novel “Pantagruel”. With great artistic power Brueghel painted absurdity and foolishness of humans. The oil-on-oak-panel painting was originally entitled “The Blue Cloak or The Folly of the World”. His son made about 20 copies of his father’s painting, but not all copies exactly reproduce the original, differing from it in a few details.

The Siberian crane was associated with spring sun, kind celestial spirits and was considered divine. Killing the beautiful white bird was a great sin. Medieval and Renaissance beauties in engravings is a gallery of British Queens. In the Medieval times children from royal and noble families were married at a young age. Usually girls were as young as 12 when they married, and boys as young as 14. The first recorded age-of-consent law dates back 800 years. In 1275, in England, Westminster 1 statute, made it a misdemeanor to “ravish” a “maiden within age,” whether with or without her consent. “Within age” was the age of marriage, which at the time was 12 years of age. There were authorities who claimed that consent could take place earlier. For many noble-born or royal women, marriage often took place at a young age. There are many instances or very young girls being betrothed and married under the age of 10 years old.

Born in London, his artistic career has spanned more than seven decades. Considered the chief master of marine and landscape painting of his generation, Peter Ellenshaw worked with many acclaimed directors. In particular, Walt Disney, Stanley Kubrick and Michael Powell. He was the Oscar winner for special effects artist, film production designer, illustrator and designer of formal concept of “Disney Legend.” Beautiful works by Peter Ellenshaw decorate collections and galleries around the world. He has received numerous awards from many prestigious institutions. Among them the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the American Film Institute in Chicago. In February 2007, Peter died peacefully at his home in Santa Barbara, California. He was 93.

British self-taught artist Peter Williams was born in 1952. He worked as a lorry driver, computer analyst, college tutor, but always found time to create art in his spare time. In 2002 he took the life changing step of becoming a full time artist, being commissioned as feature artist for Hertfordshire Life magazine. Then he moved to the East coast of Suffolk in 2005, where he lives and works now. The talented artist concentrates on wildlife and figurative work, producing beautiful and highly detailed, photo-realistic graphite, charcoal, watercolor, pastel or mixed media images. Peter Williams was honored for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist Of The Year award 2010 and 2011. Nicknamed ‘Cloudmilk’ (born August 14), Claude has been on deviant art since 2010 when he started drawing. According to the artist, he is still searching his own style. Cloudmilk’s small gallery includes beautiful hyperrealistic pencil drawings which leave no one indifferent. The young artist tries to capture the essential of a subject, and shows emotion, movement and light.
The artist himself says “I love all kind of graphic arts. I focus on graphite drawing at the moment as I’m learning, but my goal is painting and wood sculpture. Photography can be so inspiring too. I love classical and realistic art.. I wish I could live with my art … sometime”.
