The author of the above photo – Lillian Bassman. In fact, Bassman became famous in the world of fashion photography for her psychological portraits. In particular, for the special aura in them, where her models women – unearthly creatures. According to her biography, Lillian’s parents emigrated to the United States from Russia in 1905 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. Bassman studied at the Textile High School in Manhattan, when her teacher, among others, was Russian-born photographer and designer Alexey Brodovitch.
Lillian met her future husband, the photographer Paul Himmel, and they got married in 1935. Noteworthy, the couple lived happily for 73 years (!) till his death in 2009. Three years later, Lillian Bassman died (February 13, 2012), at the age of 94.

Her artwork is a contrasts between light and dark, the graininess of the finished photos, and the geometric placement and camera angles of the subjects. Bassman became one of the last great woman photographers in the world of fashion.
