Nature is the main and only inspiration for Ego Guiotto, and he doesn’t have to stray far from his home, close to the Royal National Park in Sydney’s south, to find plenty. It takes him 2-3 weeks to complete a painting, following a period of research in which he studies photographs and specimens of his subject, completing a series of preliminary sketches before embarking on the final painting. Using a tiny, size-zero paintbrush, Ego skilfully renders the remarkably fine details of fur, feather or leaf that are such a distinguishing feature of his work.
