Stained glass enamel is one of the most refined and sophisticated artistic techniques introduced in Russia at the end of 19th century. Precious art glassware, jewelry and crafts from stained glass enamels were always considered to be the pinnacle of the jeweler’s art, made by the best Jewelers of the world – Benvenuto Cellini, Pavel Ovchinnikov, Ivan Khlebnikov, a number of the enamel masters from France and Germany. The apparent advantage of stained glass enamels is their functionality. On the strength of products stained glass enamels are far superior to glass and porcelain. The process of creating products with color enamel is incredibly complicated. Even a mature master has to do more than a dozen experiments before he manages to get the desired shade of enamel. Each enameler should be not only an artist, but a great technologist. Often work with enamel because of some technological fixes “dies” at the last stage of its manufacture. That is why even in the days of the golden age of Russian art, enamel was a real work of art, very rare and tended to be consigned to a narrow circle of connoisseurs and experts. An exclusive nature of these works explains high prices, it was available only for a few representatives of the nobility.
This technique got its name due to the similarity with stained glass Windows made of glass because it is translucent colored enamel, located in clusters of metallic partition walls, reminiscent of the colored stained glass in a frame of metal. Metal frames for stained glass enamels were made from gold, silver or copper.
