From Norwich John Oxford Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Arts:
Patchwork, needlework made of assorted small pieces of fabric sewn together at the edges to form a kind of cloth mosaic. This simple and economical method of producing patterned textiles is both ancient and wide-spread. During the Renaissance, using silks and velvet as its raw materials, it was a sumptuous element in ecclesiastical and secular decoration. The technique is more generally associated with folk art, particularly (since the 18th century) in the production of patchwork quilts, their cheerful, colorful patterns usually formed from innumerable regularly shaped scraps of printed cotton. Patchwork of irregular shapes is sometimes called crazy patchwork.
