Abandoned creepy Hospital of Hitler
Abandoned creepy Hospital of Hitler
For the last years of XIX century the population of Berlin has increased dramatically, which caused the problem of accommodating people. So, by 1898 the German Insurance Institute of the population had built a sanatorium for tuberculosis victims. Belitz-Haylshtetten gradually expanded and operated for decades, taking under its wing many notorious patients, including Adolf Hitler. But now abandoned sanatorium could be an excellent backdrop for filming horror movies.
Forest Belitz is not far from the capital of Germany. However, it was considered a suitable place for the construction of the sanatorium, because there was a good air and beautiful scenery. But when in 1914 the outbreak of the First World War, the resort quickly turned into a hospital for soldiers.
Meanwhile, in the last months of 1916 a young soldier named Adolf Hitler had to recover here from a thigh injury, which he received during the Battle of the Somme. In the post-war 1920s resort expanded to thousands of patients could be treated at the same time. The House was like a small town: it had its own butcher shop, a bakery and laundry, not to mention the restaurant and beer garden.
Due to the economic crisis in 1923-1924, several departments of the hospital were forced to close. By the end of the decade sanatorium was fully re-opened, and even a new surgical ward for women was built. It had its own power plant that produced so much heat that even in the most severe winter snow always melted in the resort.
In the 1930s sanatorium continued to flourish, although on the horizon loomed the prospect of war.
During the Second World War sanatorium once again became a military hospital, and several buildings were destroyed by enemies of Germany. After the war, the resort was in the hands of the Soviet authorities within the GDR. Now the resort received Soviet soldiers who served in the region, as well as high-ranking officials of the GDR, including Erich Honecker.
In the end, the Soviets left the place in 1994, and the hospital remained vacant. After this a small part of resort was rebuilt. But most of the buildings remain in ruins. And the ghosts of the sanatorium Belitz live by themselves, worried perhaps by the rare urban researcher or journalist.
