Once, in 1955, renowned photographer Norman Parkinson, who worked at Vogue, visited Stockholm. And it was there he saw 14-year-old Nena. Thanks to this meeting began the modeling career of the young beauty. Just in two years Nena moved to London, where she became a part of the world of high fashion. While waiting for her runaway success, a young Swede received a contract with New York modeling agency of Eileen Ford. Of course, Nena gladly accepted the offer and went to another continent. There started her cooperation with the magazines Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. And of course, she posed for the best photographers of the time – Richard Avedon, William Klein, Bert Stern and Norman Parkinson.

Just in one year Timothy and Nena married in the mansion of billionaire William Hitchcock in Millbrook. Noteworthy, Donn Pennebaker captured this rather unusual wedding ceremony in a documentary film “You’re Nobody Til Somebody Loves You”.

Unfortunately, marriage with Timothy Leary lasted only one year, and in 1965 Nena filed for divorce. However, two years later she remarried (1967). New chosen became the first American-born Tibetan monk – Robert Thurman. The same year, the couple had their first child – Ganden Thurman.

Later, Nena gave up her modeling career, and decided to devote herself to the family. The same 1970, Robert and Nena had a second child – a daughter who was named Uma. The Thurmans have two more children: sons Dechen (b. 1973) and Mipam (b. 1978).
