The name of this Scandinavian beauty Nena von Schlebrugge may seem unfamiliar. However, in facial features of this elegant lady you will recognize her daughter – Uma Thurman. In fact, Nena von Schlebrugge was a very famous model in the ’60s, and her pretty face repeatedly appeared in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. By the way, her marvelous beauty the girl inherited from the mother, who in her youth had time to work as a model for the artist Axel Ebbe. In 1941, in Mexico City in the family of Swede Birgit Holmquist (1911–1973) and German aristocrat Baron Friedrich Karl Johannes von Schlebrügge (1886–1954) was born daughter, Birgitte Caroline, or Nena.
Once, in 1955, renowned photographer Norman Parkinson, who worked at Vogue, visited Stockholm. And it was there he saw 14-year-old Nena. Thanks to this meeting began the modeling career of the young beauty. Just in two years Nena moved to London, where she became a part of the world of high fashion. While waiting for her runaway success, a young Swede received a contract with New York modeling agency of Eileen Ford. Of course, Nena gladly accepted the offer and went to another continent. There started her cooperation with the magazines Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. And of course, she posed for the best photographers of the time – Richard Avedon, William Klein, Bert Stern and Norman Parkinson.
Interestingly, in 1963, Salvador Dali introduced already popular model Nena von Schlebrugge to an eccentric psychiatrist Timothy Leary. By the way, that same Leary known for his research work on the impact of psychedelic drugs on the human nervous system. Just in one year Timothy and Nena married in the mansion of billionaire William Hitchcock in Millbrook. Noteworthy, Donn Pennebaker captured this rather unusual wedding ceremony in a documentary film “You’re Nobody Til Somebody Loves You”.
Unfortunately, marriage with Timothy Leary lasted only one year, and in 1965 Nena filed for divorce. However, two years later she remarried (1967). New chosen became the first American-born Tibetan monk – Robert Thurman. The same year, the couple had their first child – Ganden Thurman.
In general, 1967 turned out to be the event for Nena. The changes affected not only the family, but also a career. Nena had a small role in the film by Eddie Sedgwick “Ciao! Manhattan”. However, unfortunately, the latter episodes with the known model were removed.
Later, Nena gave up her modeling career, and decided to devote herself to the family. The same 1970, Robert and Nena had a second child – a daughter who was named Uma. The Thurmans have two more children: sons Dechen (b. 1973) and Mipam (b. 1978).
In addition, Nena actively engaged in the popularization of Buddhism in the United States. From 1987 to 1989 she served as program director at the New York Open Centre, from 1991 to 1992 – Managing Director of Tibet House US, since 2001 and to this day Nena is executive director of the Tibetan medicine Menla Mountain Retreat.
