Young British artist Keira Rathbone lives and works in London. Her creative mind and talent let her draw amazing pictures and landscapes, portraits of celebrities using a typewriter. In the gallery of her artworks are portraits of Nicole Kidman, very beautiful the same beautiful as Keira is, and Queen Elizabeth II. Meanwhile, Rathbone’s typing of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, specially typed to commemorate the Jubilee celebrations in 2012. As for Monsieur Gainsbourg, Rathbone typed this work in 2007. The reason for choosing to typict Serge Gainsbourg was, quite simply, because he/his music is an inspiration for her.
This was typed in 2008, after Rathbone was invited to London Fashion Week event ‘On|Off’ at the Royal Academy of Art, London September 2009, where she would type live and exhibit her work. She decided to create a ‘collection’ of typing that took inspiration from the Sunday style magazines she used to enjoy leafing through, as well as depicting some of the iconic faces of fashion.
When researching images to portray, this particular photograph of Kate Moss stood out for Rathbone stylistically, as the expression and accessories reminded Rathbone of an Art Nouveau poster. It also shone out as a great chance for her to explore many different characters within one piece, as there were so many textures and shapes going on in the photograph she worked from.
