The ancient Romans sometimes decked their tombs with roses, and Roman wills frequently specified that roses be planted on the grave. In Switzerland cemeteries still are known as rose- gardens. In Christian symbolism the rose is associated with the Virgin Mary, one of whose titles is “The Mystical Rose.” It is also associated with St. Dorothy, who carries roses in a basket. Rosebush and the Apple Tree, The Jewish fable found in the Talmud.
A rosebush and an apple tree were having a debate.
“Who can compare with me?” the rosebush asked. “My flowers are beautiful and sweet to smell. True, you are larger, but what pleasure do you give to mankind?”
“Even though you are more beautiful than I,” replied the apple, “you are not as good as I am.” “What do you mean?” replied the rosebush. “How are you better than I?”
“You do not give your flowers to man unless you first wound him with your thorns. But I give my fruit to all, even those who throw stones at me.”
