American supermodel of 90’s and advocate for global maternal health Christy Nicole Turlington was born on January 2, 1969, in the small town of Walnut Creek, California, United States. As a child Christy Turlington never thought about a career in the fashion industry. At the age of 13 she had a passion for horses, trained every day and even participated in a local contest. Around this time she was discovered by the photographer Dennie Cody, Christie’s parents reluctantly agreed to the model work. At first Christy didn’t take a new occupation seriously, but she thought that the modelling would bring her the money for equestrian sports.
The girl had signed a contract with a local agency. She worked in the evenings, on weekends and after school. Her first work assignment was a series of promotional photos for online shopping Emporium Capwell. She received 100 dollars an hour.
The list of her modelling career include «Avon», «Versace», «Canon», «Cerruti 1881», «Christian Dior» Haute couture, «Chloe», «Dolce & Gabbana», «Escada», «Gianfranco Ferre», «H&M», «Lanvin», «Louis Vuitton», «Mango», «MaxMara», «Maybelline», «Michael Kors», «Oscar de la Renta», «Prada», «Puma», «Revlon», «Trussardi», «Valentino» и «Yves Saint Laurent».
Christy Turlington is a mother of two children – daughter Grace (born 2003), and son Finn (born 2006). Christy is an advocate for global maternal health, known for her humanitarian activities.
Christy founded “Every Mother Counts” in 2010 after completing her first documentary film, “No Woman, No Cry”, where she shared the powerful stories of at-risk pregnant women from around the world. Inspired by her own experience, Christy suffered a serious complication just after delivering her first child; the documentary film reveals four stories from a remote Maasai tribe in Tanzania, a slum of Bangladesh, a post-abortion care ward in Guatemala, and a prenatal clinic in the United States.
In 2005, while pregnant with her second child, she traveled with the organization CARE to El Salvador. Christy visited a remote village where pregnant women and mothers of newborns had walked for miles to access clean water. She returned home to New York City and gave birth to her son Finn. But she continued to think about those women she had met, who had so much to fear. “As a result, I was inspired to learn more about maternal health in other impoverished parts of the world and was horrified by the tragic statistics I found”.
From 2007 to 2019 she traveled to Ayacucho Region in Peru with CARE, Swaziland (Africa) with (RED), Bangladesh, Guatemala, Tanzania, Canada to film for “No Woman, No Cry”, Senegal, Ghana, Mozambique and Kenya.
Christy Turlington launched an advocacy and mobilization campaign “Every Mother Counts” to increase education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally.
