In December 2011 the pearl La Peregrina was sold as part of Elizabeth Taylor’s collection for a record price of more than $11 million at Christie’s in New York.

Richard Burton bought La Peregrina pearl at a Sotheby’s auction in 1969 and gave it to his wife, Elizabeth Taylor, as a Valentine’s Day present. The couple married and divorced twice — with their second marriage lasting only nine months. Elizabeth Taylor held on to the pearl and married a total of eight times.
