Kate Larsson’s watercolors
American artist Kate Larsson took her first watercolor class at a local community college in October 1996. She set up a permanent studio in her living room and taped all her works in progress on the walls. Larsson studied art theory, art technique and famous artists. In fact, her main focus is on color, patterns and movement. In September of 1998 she had her first solo show and was accepted into her first art gallery. “If my art touches someone, makes them feel happier or more in touch with nature, then I am pleased.”
According to Kate, she uses her own photos to create a composition. First, she creates a detailed drawing in pencil, and then begins to apply the watercolors. Also, she works over the entire piece, one section at a time. After the first application of watercolor has dried, she reapplies another coat. She continues this process until she has applied 5 to 8 layers of color. Meanwhile, by using transparent watercolors she maintains the “white of the paper”, resulting in vibrant, intense coloration. Her artistic goal is to create an art piece that reflects the marvelous colors and beauty of everyday objects. Italian pottery, flowers, dragonflies, and landscapes are all presented in bold and graphic style with a touch of whimsy. And the most common thing that people say about her colorful work is that it makes them happy.
