Liliuokalani the first and last Queen of Hawaii
Known as Liliuokalani, she was the last monarch and only queen regnant of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Born on September 2, 1838 to High Chiefess Analea Keohokalole and High Chief Caesar Kaluaiku Kapalakea, Liliuokalani was one of 15 children. Also known as Lydia Kamakaeha Paki, with the chosen royal name of Liliuokalani, and her married name was Lydia K. In 1874 Liliuokalani’s brother David Kalakaua became a king. Accordingly, when he died in January 1891, Liliuokalani ascended the throne.
Queen Liliuokalani, was the last Hawaiian sovereign to govern the islands, which were annexed by the United States in 1898. When she was overthrown Liliuokalani was fined thousands of pounds and imprisoned in her palace.
Locked up in her palace and spending her lonely days composing sad songs, the life story of Hawaii’s first and last Queen is tragic.
In 1874 Liliuokalani’s brother David Kalakaua was chosen king, but when he died in January 1891, Liliuokalani ascended the throne, becoming the first woman ever to occupy it.
