Movie posters paintings by Ger Eikendal
Born in 1954, Groningen, the Netherlands, Ger Eikendal is a talented Dutch artist. His amazing paintings of old movie posters lead us to the world of vintage movies and beautiful actresses of XX century. According to the artist, it’s the German critical realism from the thirties of the last century that attracts him most. Oftentimes, we see the image of Marilyn Monroe on a poster as a symbol of beauty, loneliness and decay, like the ruins of old buildings. For Eikendal these images embody the tragedy of the passing time. However, they still represent the respect of the matter: beauty and transience go together.
Ger Eikendal studied drawing and civics in Groningen, where he got his critical view of society. The influence of advertising is clearly recognizable in his performances. Not only the use of posters and graffiti, but also the unique structure of the show refers to it. Technique and imagination go hand in hand.
