Russian Arctic – Journey to the eightieth parallel
Federal Government created National Park “Russian Arctic” on June 15, 2009. In fact, the territory of the national park is the northern part of Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The total area of the national park – 1.426 million hectares. The aim of the “Russian Arctic” – to preserve the natural systems and the most valuable objects of the National Park and “Franz Josef” land. It is the state natural reserve of federal importance.
Meanwhile, for two weeks in July, took place a comprehensive scientific expedition of the National Park “Russian Arctic” and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF Russia). Composed of sixty people the research vessel “Professor Molchanov” passed four thousand nautical miles, and rose above the eightieth parallel. Then, the expedition made a landing in the national park and the federal reserve “Franz Josef Land.”
First of all, the main purpose of the expedition was to collect information about the state of ecosystems and the cultural and historical heritage in the Orange Islands and the Cape of Desire.
