Beautiful and impressive statue of Christ the Redeemer welcomes anyone who visits Brazil. Noteworthy, 39.6 meters (130 ft) tall, and 30 meters (98 ft) wide, this monument is the second largest Art Deco statue in the world. Located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. Meanwhile, the 635 ton (625 long, 700 short tons) symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon of Rio and Brazil. Made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, it was constructed between 1922 and 1931. Beautiful, For God gave his son Because that’s how much he loves us, He stretched out his hands & said “I love you this much, GOD BLESS THE WORLD”.
Over the past 75 years, the statue was repaired twice – in 1980 and 1990. In 1932 and 2000 the system was upgraded with night illumination. In 2003 the rise, leading to the observation deck, was equipped with escalators. In 2007, the statue was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
October 26, 2007 hierarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church and the ROCOR for the first time in the history of committed Orthodox worshiped the statue. A worship service was attended by a number of officials and businessmen arrived in Rio de Janeiro during the Days of Russia in Latin America.
July 10, 2008 the statue was hit by lightning. In April 2010, the statue for the first time in its history, was attacked by vandals. On the face and hands of the statue with black paint were applied labels (“cat out of the house – the mouse to dance,” etc.) The inscriptions were promptly removed.
