The Mechanical Trumpeter invented in 1810
Constructed by Friedrich Kaufmann, from Dresden, Germany, in 1810, the life-size trumpeter became a sensation. The Trumpeter in Spanish costume had leather bellows for lungs and reeds which imitated the sound of a brass instrument. This is a program mounted into an automata to play a tune, like the European street organs. The notches mounted on the drum activated valves that let the air pass by 12 tongues. It produced a kind of modulated through a trumpet sound. The stepped drum and the bellows powered by a spring mechanism needed to be wound up, with the crank laying at the bottom. The height of this automata is 180 cm. In 1812 Carl Maria von Weber traveled to the Kaufmanns’ workshop and was pleasantly surprised by the automaton, claiming that it possessed a ‘beautiful tone’…”

The famous Museum of Science and Technology in Munich still keeps this mechanical trumpeter – the brainchild of a talented German mechanic Johann Kaufmann. The Musician can play some pretty complex melodies on the trumpet. It was created more than two hundred years ago, but is still in working condition.
