Born Bajla Węgier October 23, 1928, Bella Darvi was one of the most beautiful Polish actresses, Golden Globe Award winner (1954). She grew up in a large Jewish family of five children. Her father Haim Vegier and mother Chaya Vegier were bakers. During the second world war, she was imprisoned by the Nazis in World War II, and released in 1943.

On October 7, 1950, she married businessman Elban Cavalkade and moved with him to Monaco. In Paris, Virginia Fox met her and became fascinated by her voice and appearance. She reminded her Ingrid Bergman. Virginia introduced Bella to her husband, magnate Darryl F. Zanuk. In 1952, Bella divorced from Cavalcade and moved with Zanuk and his wife to Hollywood (California, USA) – they became her mentors.

After Bella signed a contract (August 1953), she had to change her name to Darvi – a combination of the first names of Darryl and Virginia. Ultimately, Bella became the mistress of Zanuk. Soon, Zanuk left his wife for Darvi, but left her after learning about her lesbian or at least bisexual inclinations.

In the film “Hell and Flood” (1954), she played Richard Widmark’s beloved; in “Racers” (1955), Kirk Douglas became her partner. But she became best known for playing the role of Nefer, a seductive Babylonian courtesan in the film Egyptian (1954). Critics with enviable persistence criticized her – for the complete inability to play, for a slight squint, for a strong accent and lisping.

On November 13, 1960, in Las Vegas, Darvi married Claude Rouz, a waiter. However, this marriage was annulled less than a year later. After that, Bella returned to Europe, where she played in several minor films and quickly returned to her previous habits — liqueur and card games. She regularly turned to Zanuk for help, but he ignored her.

Completely devastated and cornered by numerous debts and setbacks, she made several suicide attempts and eventually succeeded in one of them. On September 11, 1971, the 42-year-old actress committed suicide by poisoning herself with gas in Monte Carlo. Her body was discovered only after 10 days.
