According to initial idea, they planned to start showing film in autumn 1990. However, Orion Pictures decided to hold out until January 1991, so as not to create competition to their other hit “Dances with Wolves”, also very successful Oscar-winning race film.
Interestingly, the role of Hannibal Lecter could play Gene Hackman. At the same time, in the role of Clarice could appear Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Ryan. However, Michelle Pfeiffer gave up the lead role, citing the fact that the film will be very bloody and cruel. In addition to Hackman, for the role of Dr. Lecter claimed Robert Duvall, Jeremy Irons and Brian Cox.
And it was Pittsburgh, where the most of the footagetook place. The town ideally suited for filming due to the huge number of architectural structures and other beautiful places. Thus, the participants of the crew managed to create the illusion that the shooting took place in different parts of the country.
This picture was the third in the history of the Oscars, has managed to win all five major awards: “Best Picture”, “Best Director”, “Best Actor”, “Best Actress” and “Best Screenplay”. During one of the scenes in solitary confinement Anthony Hopkins tried to look straight into the camera, saying that in this perspective. Thus, the viewer gets the impression that his character “knows everything.” The prototype of Hannibal Lecter was a serial killer Albert Fish. This subhuman, in particular, most preferred to hunt for little girls, torture them before kill them and eat their mutilated bodies. In preparation for the fulfillment of this role, Anthony Hopkins carefully examined the dossier on the most famous serial killers of our time. Besides, he visited the prison where these personalities were. In addition, he even visited a couple of high-profile trials.
Meanwhile, in preparation for filming Jodie Foster and Scott Glenn had to listen to audio recordings made by maniacs about the murders committed by them. However, Jody refused to listen to these chilling recording. But Scott had the misfortune to dare, and according to him, for a sufficiently long period of time nightmares haunted him.
While studying the video, Anthony said that maniac Charles Manson never blinked during the conversation, and this observation he immediately transferred to the screen. Anthony Hopkins got only 16 minutes of screen time, which, however, did not prevent the brilliant actor to win an Oscar for “Best Actor”. In the near future, this record is unlikely to be beaten by someone.
