Beautiful Thatched Houses England
Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation. In particular, straw, water reed, sedge, rushes and heather, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof. Meanwhile, it is a very old roofing method and used in both tropical and temperate climates. Noteworthy, builders still use thatch in developing countries, usually with low-cost, local vegetation. By contrast in some developed countries it is now the choice of affluent people who desire a rustic look for their home. Or who have purchased an originally thatched abode.
Traditionally, thatching has been a craft and technique of house building in England. But even in the 21st century people continue this method of building. However, they are expensive to maintain and became a sign of luxury. The reason is simple – modern materials are cheaper and easier. Besides, thatched houses are under threat due to the climate change. Also, wetter weather causees moss and algae that gradually destroys such houses.
And of course, the material – wheat straw, or water reed covering the house provides habitat and even food for wildlife, especially birds and insects.
